Freshman Elvis Nnaji becomes the first George Mason transfer portal action this offseason. It’s not surprising he’s looking to transfer as he didn’t see much action appearing in 13 games and averaging about four minutes in those contests. The 6’7” forward from Hopkins, Minnesota was one of Kim English’s first recruits after arriving in Fairfax. It seems that the minutes just weren’t there for him as a reserve player with graduate senior Ginika Ojiako, junior Malik Henry, and Mason going with a mostly guard heavy lineup outside of that.
Perhaps his development wasn’t trending up enough either, as it did appear in the limited action we saw that the game was a little too fast for him at times. Either way transfers are enviable these days with players not having to sit out a year like they used to once they move to a new school. It would be great news if Nnaji is leaving because he got word that Josh Oduro is returning and that would greatly decrease his chances of earning minutes but we don’t know yet. This movement is also what probably helped sparked the recent commitment of recruit Jordan Marsh:
I would expect this to not be the last transfer portal news we hear this offseason, especially if Josh Oduro decides to go pro somewhere. They are in need of some legit shooters and additional bigs either way now, it just depends on how many roster spots they have to play with. English getting to 20 wins in his second season should help bring some more attention eye balls on the program in terms of veteran transfers. I would like to see him develop some young players like Justyn Fernandez and Devin Dinkins but the A-10 is so cut throat and they may need the transfer help just to stay in pace.
