Josh Oduro changed his body after a mean tweet during his freshman year
Josh Oduro was an overlooked high school recruit from Gainesville, VA coming into George Mason his freshman year. He played for Paul VI, a local powerhouse that often gets national attention in the high circuit and churns out five star recruits to big programs. His overall physique and footwork look drastically different today when comparing them to when he stepped on to campus back in 2019. While getting into better shape and improving the little things in his game, he developed into an all-conference talent by his junior year. Oduro will go down as one of the best bigs to ever play at George Mason. But what motivated him to put in the work and change his body? Apparently it was a mean tweet from a fan during his freshman year.
I’ve tried to tone back my own harsh criticism of the players, especially the younger ones, but I’m still guilty of doing it. Most of us are, especially when the team suffers bad losses. Our friend Petey Buckets wrote a tweet during a game against VCU that apparently sparked the change for Oduro after reading.
How do we know this? Well the TV broadcast of the quarterfinal game against Saint Louis on USA Network thought it was worthy enough to mention during the game. Petey later shared a video snippet of when it was mentioned during the game:
Oh yes the power of twitter. I always find it funny that some of these guys take anything us fans say seriously but in this case at least it fueled motivation and turned into a real positive. Oduro’s journey at Mason has been fun to watch develop, although it would have been nice to see him play in the NCAA tournament. Hope he chooses to use his extra year of eligibility and give us one more year but we’ll have to wait and see.
