Freshman Justyn Fernandez follows Kim English to Providence
Fernandez is the first transfer portal casualty of the offseason for George Mason
Justyn Fernandez was the highest rated recruit to come to George Mason in quite some time. He was a four star prospect and had offers from several big programs in the Big East, ACC and SEC but ultimately chose to commit to Kim English. With the portal transfer flood gates open now that English has left Fernandez becomes the first casualty. To no surprise he’s following English to Providence in the Big East.

Fernandez had a slow start after arriving to Fairfax at the end of last year. I had thought he’d hit the ground running a bit more his freshman season after being with the program a semester early but that wasn’t the case. He eventually got more playing time and a starting role when Victor Bailey Jr. got injured towards the end of the year. We saw a bunch of flashes of his athletic ability and overall talent but finished the season averaging 14.1 MPG, 4.1 PPG, and 1.9 RPG while shooting 37% from the field. Most fans probably expected a lot more. He had his biggest game against UMass scoring 18 points and hitting 3-for-4 three-pointers. It took him awhile to earn more minutes because of his defense, which improved along the season, but still an area of weakness for him.
Blake Jones, Ronald Polite, and Josh Oduro have also entered the transfer portal.
