Portal Kombat: George Mason adds 6'11" Siena forward Giovanni Emejuru
George Mason has had news recently of losing guys to the transfer portal but now we have news of their first get of the off-season. On Thursday 6’11” forward Giovanni Emejuru from Siena announced he’s coming to Fairfax. Emejuru has two years remaining and was at Sam Houston St. with Mason assistant coach Mike Ekanem prior to being at Siena. A native of Leicester, England, he averaged 11.3 PPG and 6.3 RPG this past season and has had high offensive rebounding rate metrics per Kenpom.
He will bring excellent depth to the front court backing up Jalen Haynes at the five spot. With Amari Kelly’s eligibility out they needed to add some size and toughness in the front court. Emejuru can be a gritty, tough defender and should blend in nicely with Tony Skinn’s #PatriotPressure.
Skinn still has work to do in the portal as the Patriots could still use some more shooters and depth at the wing. Keyshawn Hall’s departure leaves a pretty big hole at the four, despite Woody Newton filling in late in the season. There’s a ton of names linked to Mason and we will continue to see more as the NCAA tournament comes to an end soon. They have a solid core returning with Jared Billups, Darius Maddox, Jalen Haynes, and emerging freshman point guard Baraka Okojie.
